Captained by his country three times he was named to lead Wales versus New Zealand in 1972 but Lewis was forced to withdraw through injury. A strong and powerful centre, he relished the physical side of the game.

His prowess was particularly apparent during the 1971 Lions tour to New Zealand where, although unable to feature in the test teams where John Dawes and Mike Gibson reigned supreme, he fastened the midfield during the infamous thuggery of the Canterbury encounter. An electrician by trade, Lewis played 11 times for Wales and toured Canada in 1973.
