Hiller was unfortunate to
be second choice full-back on consecutive Lions tours behind
Tom
Kiernan
in
1968 and JPR
Williams in 1971. A dependable player and a talented kicker
Hiller excelled for Harlequins, Surrey and England captaining
his country 7 times from his 19 appearances while scoring 138
points including 3 tries.
Only Barry John was to match his
record of scoring in every game in which he played, on the
1971 Lions tour, and he amassed 110 points in only 11 matches.
Known for a sharp wit and a staccato style of parlance, Hiller’s
popularity comes as much from his unquenchable team spirit
as his humour despite being confined solely to mid-week tour
duties.
