‘Chico’ Hopkins’ finest
international achievements come arguably from his British Lions
performances rather than his Welsh appearances. Forever in
the shadow of the great Gareth Edwards, Hopkins had to take
his opportunities on the few occasions when Edwards left the
field through injury.
When he replaced Edwards against England
in 1970 he bagged himself a typical sniper’s score and
(again as replacement for Edwards) on the Lions tour of Australia
and New Zealand in 1971, this most popular of tourists was
to play superbly in the 9 - 3 first Test victory in Dunedin.
Born in Maesteg, and a player for both Maesteg and Llanelli,
Hopkins moved north to Rugby League in 1972 to play for Swinton
RLFC.
