‘Frank’ Laidlaw, of Melrose,
was first capped in 1965 and his Scottish career spanned 6
years. In 1966 he was selected to tour with the British Lions
and fought for the hooker’s position with Ken Kennedy,
who was initially the selectors’ first choice. Laidlaw’s
displays in provincial matches were rewarded with the hooker’s
berth for the second Test against the All Blacks.
He later returned
to New Zealand with the 1971 Lions, this time as understudy
to John Pullin. After playing 3 matches he damaged knee ligaments
but recovered well after a 6 match layoff to complete the
tour. Born in Hawick and a player for Melrose, he was capped
32 times
for Scotland and twice for the Lions; although an excellent
all-round performer he never managed to score an international
try.
