Widely renowned as the greatest rugby
player ever, Edwards was the complete scrum-half; able to fire
exceptionally long passes giving backs time and space, while
being a constant threat to fringe defenders; ever aware that
in an instant he may bust through half-gaps with his brutish
strength and ferocious acceleration.
Capped 53 times and scoring
88 points for Wales he gained 10 full caps for the British
Lions on three tours, and captained the side 4 times during
provincial matches in South Africa.
Educated at Ponterdawe
Technical School, Millfield School and Cardiff College of
Education, Edwards was voted ‘most promising athlete’ of
1964 by the Welsh Games Committee, won the English Schools
200m
hurdling title and gained an MBE in 1975 for services to
rugby.
During the 1971 tour to Australia and New Zealand Edwards
was hampered by a hamstring injury, but still managed to sustain
his test place for all four matches and starred in the
third
test victory in Wellington. |
