Brown was the son of Scotland’s
international goalkeeper, Jock and the brother of Scotland’s
rugby captain Peter.
He made his international debut in 1969
and in 1971 was selected to tour with the British Lions to
Australia and New Zealand. He suffered a knee injury towards
the end of the tour that distracted his international career
on his return. But Brown defied the early New Zealand press
that labeled him ‘a boy amongst men’ and enhanced
his skills by adding a hard ‘edge’ to his game
and returned as the most improved forward on the tour.
Brown
was chosen to tour in 1974 and again in 1977, despite
missing the regular 1977 season due to a suspension. The
West of Scotland player toured a total of three times, gaining
8
caps.
