One of the world’s greats: ‘JPR’ played
54 times for Wales at full-back and once as flanker. Once described
as a ‘veritable rock… with that little touch of
madness’ Williams’ reputation was of fearlessness
to the extreme.
Educated at Bridgend County School and Millfield
School, he is on of four brothers to have won the Welsh junior
tennis title but the only sibling to have lifted, in 1966,
the junior Wimbledon tennis trophy.
JPR toured with two Lions
squads, in 1971 to Australia and New Zealand where he played
in all four tests, and similarly doubled his caps, in 1974,
in South Africa. As well as achieving almost everything available
in rugby (including 3 Grand Slams between 1969-78), he
is also
an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports injuries.
He slotted the vital drop goal to clinch the 1971 Lions series
in the 4th test at Dunedin, New Zealand. |
