A thunderous runner, Doug Smith the
1971 Lions team manager was once quoted as exclaiming of Bevan, ‘that
boy is terrific and would do anything I asked of him for the
team.’
He was only capped 10 times for his country and
once for the Lions test side on account of his move north,
in 1973, to represent Warrington, Wales and Great Britain
in rugby league for the pinnacle of his career. A PE student
at the Cardiff College of Education and a tremendous gymnast,
Bevan’s furious playing style earned him 11 tries in
his first 5 matches on the Lions tour to New Zealand in 1971.
His attempt at reaching Tony O’Reilly’s 1959 try-scoring
record of 22 tries on one tour was hampered by his loss of
form after his initial impact, but a final tally of 18 is testament
to his dynamic play. |
