Another of the tourists to have captained his country Spencer was also skipper against a Combined XV of North Otago / South Canterbury / Mid Canterbury during the Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand in 1971.

Spencer was educated at Creesbrook College, Sedbergh and represented Headingley and then England 14 times scoring 2 tries. A powerful runner he was picked as a centre for the Lions but due to Mike Gibson’s consistency in midfield, there were few opportunities in his preferred position and Spencer found himself selected as a wing for the best part of the tour where his similarities with David Duckham were further enhanced.
