‘Mike’ made his debut
for Ireland in 1962 and was capped 12 times. Born in Bagenalstown,
Carlow, and a player for Terenure College, he was forced to
wait six years for his recall to the Irish back-row.
In 1971
he was selected to play for the British Lions on their tour
of New Zealand and was set to become one of the prominent
loose forwards of the squad, before a cartilage injury to his
knee
against Canterbury left him too injured to remain on the
tour. Hipwell was replaced by Rodger Arneil, and his one consolation
was that he would be returning to a land where Irish coffee
was served correctly.
