A chemical engineer from Blackrock,
McLoughlin was first captained for Ireland in 1962, when he
was an undergraduate at University College, Dublin. Having
captained his province, Connacht, McLoughlin was duly rewarded
with the captaincy of his country.
In 1966, McLoughlin toured
Australia and New Zealand with the British Lions but was
troubled by injury and only played in three of the six Tests.
Injury continued
to prevent his participation in the Irish side, however in
1971 he was recalled and then gained a place on the Lions
tour later that year to Australia and New Zealand. McLoughlin’s
tour ended early as he broke his thumb while it assisted
in some ‘early
retribution’ during the infamous Canterbury game and
so was unable to add to his Test caps.
He played 40 times for
Ireland and captained his country on 7 occasions. |
