Arneil was born in Edinburgh and was
a pupil of Edinburgh Academy. He played club rugby for Leicester,
Northampton and Edinburgh Academicals and made his Scottish
debut in 1968, winning 22 caps in total (as well as making
2 uncapped appearances against Argentina the following year).
Arneil was called up as a replacement for the
British Lions tour to South Africa in 1968. Englishman Bryan
West withdrew on the eve of the tour due to a leg injury and
so Arneil
stepped in. Despite having not been selected in the initial
party, he played in all four test matches. Arneil was again
called up as a replacement for the 1971 Lions tour and made
five appearances in New Zealand, but this time joined too
late
to push for a test place.
Although a favourite with press
and public, increasing business commitments led to his
retirement from representative rugby in 1972. |
