‘Sean’ Lynch was born
in Dublin and played his rugby for St Mary’s College.
In 1971 he became one of the club’s first players to
be capped by Ireland.
Later that year, Lynch was selected to
tour Australia and New Zealand with the British Lions as
understudy to Sandy Carmichael. When Carmichael was injured
in the provincial
match at Canterbury, Lynch stepped into his shoes and played
admirably in all four of the test matches. He also excelled
off the field while on tour and was famed for his renditions
of traditional Irish singing.
